Springbank Distillery History
1500s - Whisky Distilling began in the
Campbeltown area, said to be after Irish
travelers encouraged it. The Irish were
recorded as producing Whisky from 1405.
1823 - the Excise Act began to regulate
Whisky Distillers in Scotland.
1828 - William Reid obtained a license to
operate the Springbank Distillery in
Campbeltown.
There were about 30 Distilleries in the area
around that time, all without a licence.
1837 - Reid sold the Distillery to his
relative John Mitchell.
Johnnie Walker of Kilmarnock bought
Springbank Malt to be used in some of their
Blended Whisky.
1926 - the Prohibition in the US, 1920 -
1933, led to Springbank closing.
1933 - the Distillery re-opened.
1979 - the Distillery closed again.
1987 - the Distillery re-opened, the only
distillery in the area operating at that
time.
1989 - the Glen Scotia Distillery on the
east side of Campbeltown re-opened.
1997 - Springbank started producing triple
distilled, un-peated Hazelburn expression to
give the company a wider range of Whisky. Most
Scottish Whisky is double distilled.
Irish Whisky is normally triple distilled
but not all, said to produce a smoother
Whisky.
2004 - Springbank Distillery re-opened the
Glengyle Distillery that is situated next door.
This Distillery was founded in 1872, making 3
Distilleries in Campbeltown, all open to
visitors with shops and tours.
Today - the Springbank Distillery is still
owned by the same family, with the Whisky still
produced much the same way as when they began,
why it is more expensive than many others.
