Glen Scotia Distillery History
1500s - Whisky Distilling began in the
Campbeltown area after Irish travelers showed
the way. The Irish were known to be producing
Whisky from 1405.
1823 - the Excise Act meant Whisky
Distillers in Scotland would need a licence
from that time.
There were about 30 Distilleries without a
licence in the area around that time.
1832 - the Glen Scotia Distillery was
founded by Stewart & Galbraith and
Company.
1933 - the Distillery was taken over by the
Bloch Brothers.
1942 - the Distillery was mothballed during
World War Two.
1945 - the Distillery re-opened, changing
ownership a number of times over the following
decades.
2014 - the Distillery was taken over by the
Loch Lomond Group.
