You can buy tickets for FirstScotRail trains at stations, from major travel agents, or over the phone and online with a credit card. If the ticket office at the station is closed, you can buy a ticket on board from the inspector using cash or a credit card. However, the inspector cannot always issue discounted or special-offer tickets. The earlier you book, the less expensive your travel may be.

The three main Train Stations in Scotland are: Edinburgh Waverley in the centre of Edinburgh, Glasgow Central in the center of Glasgow, mainly for trains south, and Glasgow Queen Street in the centre of Glasgow, mainly for trains north. The Glasgow train station are situated a short walk apart.

Edinburgh - Glasgow
Trains run every 20 minutes between Edinburgh Waveley station and Glasgow Queen Street station, about 50 minutes travel time, price guide, off peak day return £10.60, anytime day return £18.70, £10.60 standard single.

Edinburgh - Aberdeen
Trains run about 1 an hour between Edinburgh Waverley station and Aberdeen station, taking about 2 hours 20 minutes. Price guide, from £10 single off peak - £40 single peak.

Trains run about every 2 hours between Edinburgh Waverley station and Inverness station with a travel time about 3 hours 30 minutes, price guide, from £18 single off peak.

Edinburgh - St Andrews / Leuchars
Trains run about every 30 minutes between Edinburgh Waverley Station and Leuchars station, travel time about 1 hour, price guide, about £14 off peak day return, or standard single £5 - £11.

Note, Leuchars Train Station is 4 miles from St Andrews, with a good taxi service and a frequent local bus service, nearly every 15 minutes between 9 am and 6 pm on weekdays and less frequently at other times, train tickets normally include the bus fare as well. Google Map.

Edinburgh - Stirling
Trains run about every 30 minutes between Edinburgh Waverley station and Stirling station, travel time about 50 minutes, price guide, about £8 off peak day return, or standard single £6.90.

Stirling train station is situated next to Stirling bus station. The open top buses in Stirling have stopped operating. You now have to use local buses to Stirling Castle, or walk, and out to the Wallace Monument that is situated close to Stirling University. Google Maps.

Glasgow - Aberdeen
Trains run about 1 an hour between Glasgow Queen Street station and Aberdeen station, travel time about 2 hours 30 minutes, price guide about £49 off peak return.

Glasgow - Ayr & Glasgow Prestwick Airport & Stranraer
Trains run about every 20 minutes between Glasgow Central station and Ayr Station, travel time about 50 minutes, price guide about off peak return £8.85, standard single £6.70. Ryanair Passengers get half price on the train - just show your boarding card. Trains call at Paisley, Johnstone, Irvine, Troon, Prestwick Airport & Prestwick Town..

Some trains go on to Stranraer calling at Maybole and Girvan, travel time between Glasgow and Stranraer is about 3 hours, price guide about £23.60 off peak return.

East Coast trains provide a service between Edinburgh and London every 30 minutes to 1 hour, travel time about 4 hours 30 minutes. Trains stop at Newcastle & York. Prices vary a lot with the cheapest the earlier you book, prices from £12 single - £124 single depending on when it is booked and time of day.
