Ben Nevis
visitor centre and start of path is 2
miles southeast of Fort William
Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the
British Isles. The mountain attracts an
estimated 225,000 visitors per year, most
of which are walkers using the
well-constructed Mountain Track from Glen
Nevis on the south side of the mountain
to the summit at 4,408 ft above sea
level. Novice walkers following the
Tourist Path take about 4 to 5 hours to
reach the summit. For climbers and
mountaineers, the main attraction lies in
the 2,300 ft high cliffs of the north
face. You do not need to walk to the top
as a walk to about 2,000 ft gives great
views and allows you to experience the
mountain. Map .

Fingals Cave
on the small Island of Staffa off the
Isle of
Mull west coast of Scotland
Fingals Cave is the Scotland end of the
Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland. Its
struture is unique, nowhere else is there
a sea-cave formed completely in
hexagonally-jointed basalt. To this the
size, the sounds, the colours, and the
remarkable symmetry of this 227-foot
cavern; and by Nature's gift of fractured
columns forming a crude walkway just
above high-water level, allowing
exploring visitors to go far inside.
Secondly, the impact of the cave on all
those who enter it, and especially on
those who do so alone, is likely to be
remembered for life. Map .
