Silver Explorer has been operated under a number of names including Prince Albert II and Society Expeditions operated her under the names World Adventurer and World Discoverer.

This ship was purchased by Silversea Cruises in the autumn of 2007, undergoing a multi-million pound refit at Fincantieri, Trieste. In June 2008, at a ceremony in Monte Carlo attended by Prince Albert II of Monaco, she was re-christened Prince Albert II before sailing to London to for her inaugural cruise. The name was change from Prince Albert II to Silver Explorer in 2011.

Silver Explorer is a 1A ice-rated vessel, carrying up to 150 passengers in 66 cabins, equipped with a library, lecture theatre and internet centre.
