Oceana was the fourth ship in this class built for Princess Cruises. Her three sister ships are Sun Princess that entered service in 1995, Dawn Princess 1997, and Sea Princess 1998. These four sisters followed Princess Cruises 70,285-ton Crown Princess and Regal Princess that entered service in 1990 and 1991.

This class of cruise ship has 10 passenger decks, 4 pools, 7 bars, casino, fitness center, 550-seat theatre, 603 outside cabins of which 410 have balconies, 408 inside cabins, can carry 1,950 passengers and a crew of 900.

Ocean Princess was transferred to the P&O fleet in 2003 to be operated under the name Oceana.
