Lirica was the first new built ship to enter service for MSC Italian Cruises. A second ship in this class, Opera, entered service in 2004 with more ships on order. These ships joined three older classic style cruise vessels in the fleet, the 35,143 ton Melody, 20,046 ton Montery and the 16,852 ton Rhapsody.

Two more ships were added to the fleet in 2004 when MSC acquired Festival's 58,000 ton European Vision to be operated under the name Armonia and her sister ship European Stars to be operated under the name Sinfonia.

The older classic style ships are being sold off as more large new cruise ships are built for MSC.

Lirica class ships have 14 decks, 2 pools, 8 bars, casino, fitness center, 713 seat theatre, 523 outside cabins with 132 having balconies, 272 inside cabins, can carry 1,586 passengers and a crew of 760.

Lirica is mainly operated on Mediterranean cruises out of Genoa and Venice, Trans-Atlantic, and South America cruises out of Rio de Janeiro. Reviews.
