Island Escape was originally built as a large cruise ferry for DFDS Seaways to operate between New York and Freeport/Bahamas under the name Scandinavia. After running at a loss on that run, she was moved to Denmark to be operated on the crossing between Copenhagen and Oslo.

The Sundance Cruise Corporation bought Scandinavia in 1984 to be used on cruises from California - Alaska and Mexico under the name Stardancer. After the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line bought the Sundance Cruise Corporation in 1990, they had Stardancer go through an extensive rebuild to convert her to a passenger only cruise ship. With that work complete, RCCL began operating her on short cruises from Los Angeles - Mexico under the name Viking Serenade.

Since the rebuild, she has 10 passenger decks, 2 pools, 6 bars, casino, fitness center, 550 seat show lounge, 478 outside cabins with 5 having balconies, 280 inside cabins, can carry 1,512 passengers and a crew of 610.

Viking Serenade was operated in a joint venture between Royal Caribbean and First Choice Holidays from 2002 under the company name Island Cruises with this ship named Island Escape on Mediterranean cruises.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd sold this cruise line to Thomson Cruises in 2008 with Island Escape joining the Thomson fleet.

Island Escape's Itinerary is now mainly various 7 night Mediterranean cruises out of Palma. Reviews.
