Insignia was the first of 8 ships in this class built for Renaissance Cruises as their R One. The last of the R class ships R Eight was completed three years later. Renaissance Cruises were declared bankrupt in 2001, this leading to all eight ships being offered for charter.

P&O/Princess Cruises have since acquired R Three, R Four & R Eight. These ships are operated under the names Pacific Princess, Ocean Princess and Royal Princess. Royal Princess was transferred to P&O in 2011 to be operated as their Adonia.

Azamara Cruises chartered R Six under the name Azamara Journey and R Seven under the name Azamara Quest.

The Miami based luxury cruise line Oceania Cruises acquired R One, R Two & R Five to be operated as their first ships Insignia, Regatta and Nautica.
