Hanseatic was originally being built for Discoverer Rederiei with the intended name being Society Adventure. This ship has been designed with a strengthened hull so she can be operated on cruises to Antarctica. Before completion, the newly founded Hanseatic Tours bought her to serve as their Hanseatic. Hapag Lloyd took over Hanseatic Tours in 1997; this seeing their only ship transferred to the Hapag Lloyd fleet.

Hanseatic has 4 passenger decks, 1 pool, 3 bars, fitness center, 200-seat theatre, 92 cabins that are all situated on the outside, can carry 184 passengers and a crew of 122.

Hanseatic's Itinerary is cruises throughout Northern Europe & Iceland, Western Europe & the Mediterranean, Far Eat & Asia, Australia & New Zealand, Antarctica, Trans Atlantic, and South America.
