Columbus was originally built for the Munich based investment company Conti as C Columbus. This ship has been designed to a size that can transit the Great Lakes / St Lawrence River seaway system. After her completion, Hapag Lloyd chartered C Columbus to be operated under the name Columbus.

Columbus has 5 passenger decks, 1 pool, 2 bars, fitness center, entertainment lounge, 134 outside cabins of which 2 have balconies, 63 inside cabins, can carry 408 passengers and a crew of 170.

Columbus Itinerary was wide ranging including cruises throughout the Mediterranean, Western Europe, Africa, Trans Atlantic, Caribbean, South America, and the Panama Canal. She also cruises the Great Lakes from Montreal - Chicago. This cruise takes her through Lake Ontario, past the Niagara Falls, through Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Superior, and Lake Michigan.

The Great Lakes were opened to sea going vessels in 1995 after the completion of the two US and five Canadian locks between lake Ontario and Montreal. These locks now allow vessels up to 730 feet long and 76 feet wide to travel from the Atlantic Ocean, along the St Lawrence River into the Great Lakes and past the Niagara Falls.

This ship has been operated by Plantours since 2012 as their MS Hamburg.
