The Carnival Cruise Line ordered seven 101,353-ton Destiny class cruise ships to enter service between 1996 and 2005. Carnival Destiny then became the first passenger ship to exceed the 83,676 tons of Cunards Queen Elizabeth built in 1938. The next class of cruise ship ordered by Carnival was this 86,000 ton Carnival Spirit class. There have been four of these ships built for Carnival with Carnival Pride entering service in 2002, Carnival Legend also in 2002, and Carnival Miracle in 2004.

This type of vessel is also regarded as a Vista Class design also seen in some Costa, Cunard, Holland America and P&O ships. These ships were designed to fit through the Panama canal locks with inches to spare.

This class of cruise ship has 12 passenger decks, 3 pools, 12 bars, casino, fitness center, 1,170 seat show lounge, 849 outside cabins with 682 having verandas, 213 inside cabins; can carry 2,124 passengers and a crew of 1,029.

Carnival Spirit was moved to Carnival's Australian division in 2012.
