Berlin was the first new cruise ship built for the German shipping company Peter Deilmann. This line began operating in 1968 by chartering coasters. Their first passenger vessel was a small ferry that operated between Neustadt/Germany and Rodby/Denmark by crossing the Baltic Sea.

Peter Deilmann also built up a fleet of large luxury River Boats for cruises along some of Europe's largest rivers. The river boats are expected to be sold off after the 2010 season.

After years of operating second hand passenger ships, Peter Deilmann Cruises ordered their first new built cruise ship Berlin in 1979. This ship was chartered for Far East cruises between 1882 and 1985 under the name Princess Mahsuri. After being returned to Deilmann, they had her lengthened by having a new 65-foot midsection fitted.

Berlin now has 5 passenger decks, 1 pool, 3 bars, casino, fitness center, movie theatre, 210 cabins, can carry 420 passengers and a crew of 180.

Berlin was mainly operated on cruises from Kiel/Germany - various ports throughout the Baltic Sea, Norway, Scotland & England. Other routes from Cuxhaven were to England, France, Portugal, Mediterranean Sea & the Caribbean.

Berlin joined Spirit of Adventure cruises in 2006 to be operated as their MV Spirit of Adventure. This was a sister line of Saga Holidays.

This ship was sold to FTI Cruises in 2012 to be operated as their Berlin on cruises throughout the Mediteranean, Northern Europe and Red Sea.
