Ben Cruachan Hike

Where: Ben Cruachan at Loch Awe by Oban in the South Highlands of Scotland
Height: Ben Cruachan 3,694ft, 1,126m & Stob Diamh 3,274ft, 998m

Ben Cruachan is situated on the north side of Loch Awe next to the A85 road, 79 miles northwest of the city of Glasgow, 17 miles east of Oban, 6 miles east of the village of Taynuilt. There are 2 roads up from the south, one through Crianlarach and Tyndrum, and the other through Arochar and Inverary. There is only 3 miles of a difference between the two routes.

These Mountains have a bit of a Trail most of the way, check the Walk Report at the Bottom to see if you fancy it, no Tourist Path.

The image below is from the road up from Inverary looking across Loch Awe to Ben Cruachan. Stob Diamh is behind the mountain on the right. About 1 mile back up this road, you get a good view of the dam up on the mountain. Large Image

The image below is from the A85 road to Oban at the Falls of Cruachan Train Station. This is a small train station with Oban trains stopping here throughout the summer. There is parking here for about 12 cars. If this park is full, you have to park about half of a mile west, past the power station in a large layby. There is a good path between the layby and here.

The start of the Ben Cruachan hike goes up the steps towards the train station, then through under the railway, as can be seen in the image below. The narrow trail then leads up to the Dam, across the top of the Dam via ladders, and on to the summit of Ben Cruachan.
